Department of Defense natural resource managers require actionable information to make management decisions. One important question is the relevance of information collected at broad spatial scales to inform local-scale decisions. A number of initiatives exist that either provide a national framework for monitoring or applying ecological information or provide specific indicator metrics of environmental status and trends across various spatial scales. Examples of these include the Ecological Indicators for the Nation, National Phenology Network, National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and Landscape Conservation Cooperatives. In combination, these initiatives attempt to provide (1) context information to inform finer scale efforts, (2) monitoring and indicator approaches that may operate across spatial scales, and (3) information to guide resource management decisions relative to landscapescale stressors. This session explored these different initiatives and how they relate to the information needs of DoD installation and range natural resource managers.
