In a keynote speech at an energy innovation summit last week, Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter referred to ESTCP's Installation Energy Test Bed initiative as an example of how the Department of Defense (DoD) is aligning itself with the research and development agenda of the Department of Energy (DOE).

Deputy Secretary Carter made his remarks at the 2012 Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E) Innovation Summit, held at the Gaylord National Hotel & Convention Center in Maryland. The event brought together researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, corporate executives, and government officials to share ideas for developing and deploying the next generation of energy technologies.

In his speech, Deputy Secretary Carter cited the Installation Energy Test Bed initiative to illustrate how DoD is working to make its installations available for DOE testing: “You provide the know-how. You provide the real research content. We in the Department of Defense won't try to compete with you there, but we will provide an installation on which you can try it out.”

Other keynote speakers included Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu, former President of the United States Bill Clinton, and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.
