ESTCP supports the demonstration of innovative technologies to improve Department of Defense (DoD) energy resilience and reduce energy and water use. At the 2021 virtual Symposium, sessions for the Installation Energy and Water Program Area will cover topics related to energy storage and microgrids, solutions to reduce carbon emissions, electric vehicles, and cybersecurity. Brief descriptions for the sessions are provided below.

Tuesday, November 30, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM (ET)

Over the last several years, advances in technology, design approaches and improvements to systems integration are bringing down the costs and improving system performance of microgrids and energy storage. In this technical session, ESTCP investigator teams and other related R&D efforts will present work that improves microgrid design, brings to market long-duration energy storage and improves system interoperability. Wednesday, December 1, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM (ET)

This technical session looks at the opportunities across the installation to offer cost-effective solutions to reduce carbon emissions. Presentations from ongoing ESTCP demonstrations will focus on innovative improvements to HVAC systems and a new project evaluating the potential to electrify mission support equipment. Speakers will also discuss geothermal systems and examples of campus-wide electrification strategies. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Wednesday, December 1, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM (ET)

Over the past few years, ESTCP has demonstrated several technologies that strive to improve the resilience of installation energy systems. In this technical session, speakers will discuss the Navy’s strategic approach to improving installation energy resilience along with a selection of ESTCP projects that address different aspects of energy resilience. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Thursday, December 2, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM

This session will highlight the ESTCP-funded program, the Military Energy Resilience Catalyst (MERC). MERC convenes leading energy resilience professionals from across DoD to provide insights and deployment acceleration support on energy resilience technologies, installation energy resilience needs, and near-term innovative solutions. The MERC team will conduct three panels spotlighting members of each of its communities - the MERC Cohort, MERC Faculty, and MERC ESTCP demonstration partners. Each panel will explore benefits of participating in the MERC program and ways to get involved with MERC. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Thursday, December 2, 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM (ET)

The RMF How-To short course is geared to help ESTCP Investigators and Project Teams become familiar with the RMF process, understand the requirements and if/how they apply and learn about the available resources and explain the differences between the Army, Navy and Air Force RMF business rules. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Please visit the Symposium website for more details regarding all sessions and short courses. The SERDP and ESTCP Symposium brings together environmental and energy researchers and technology developers with the defense end-user and regulatory communities to showcase cutting edge environmental technologies and ideas. This year’s virtual Symposium will offer 20 technical sessions, several short courses, 400 technical posters, and a variety of networking opportunities.
