SERDP and ESTCP fund research and demonstrations to better understand chemicals of concern in the environment and help the Department of Defense (DoD) manage impacted sites. The 2021 virtual Symposium will offer numerous sessions for the Environmental Restoration Program Area, covering a range of topics related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and groundwater remediation efforts. Brief summaries for each session are provided below.

Tuesday, November 30, 10:00 AM – 1:15 PM (ET)

Over the past 30 years, a tremendous amount of research has been conducted on the impacts of both legacy and emerging chemicals of concern in the environment. This session will highlight major advances in treatment of complex sites, bioremediation, thermal treatment, and chemical transport modeling. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Tuesday, November 30, 2:00 PM – 5:15 PM (ET)

The DoD is responsible for the management of installations impacted by PFAS; understanding the ecological impact of these chemicals improves decision-making related to mitigation of exposures and future environmental cleanup. This session will address the ecological toxicity and risk of PFAS, and PFAS-free firefighting formulations on avian, aquatic, and terrestrial species. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Wednesday, December 1, 10:00 AM – 1:15 PM (ET)

In recent years, SERDP and ESTCP have funded a wide range of research projects to develop more quantitative assessments of contaminant plumes in groundwater to support transition from active to more passive remedial strategies. This session will highlight the approaches, methods, models, and tools that these projects have developed. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Wednesday, December 1, 2:00 PM – 5:15 PM (ET)

SERDP and ESTCP have been addressing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment for over a decade. This session will highlight recent successful SERDP & ESTCP projects addressing PFAS source zone characterization, novel analysis and identification techniques, leaching and mobility, and field-based assessment tools. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Thursday, December 2, 10:00 AM – 1:15 PM (ET)

In recent years, research and demonstration efforts have been conducted to develop novel and more effective treatment technologies for PFAS in the environment. This session will provide a field perspective on treatment of impacted matrices and highlight the latest innovations for in situ and ex situ treatment applications that includes treatment trains and novel adsorbents. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.

Monday, November 29, 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM (ET)

This short course will review recent SERDP and ESTCP funded research to investigate and demonstrate geophysical approaches to quantitatively estimate (1) the rate coefficient governing mobile/immobile exchange, and (2) immobile porosity. Both of these parameters are critically important to reliable and accurate model-based prediction and optimal design of remediation strategies. View the full description, presentation titles and speaker information.
