Air Quality Management

Through the conduct of its mission and land management activities, DoD is a source for a number of non-point source  air emissions that are under regulatory control. SERDP and ESTCP efforts are developing and demonstrating science, models, technologies, and methods to characterize and monitor DoD’s fire and dust fugitive emissions, provide emission factors, model their dispersion and contributions to local and regional air quality, and assess and reduce their environmental impacts.

Wildland Fire Emissions Factors Database

SERDP project RC-1649 developed a fire emissions factors database in cooperation with projects RC-1648 and RC-1647. Perception of a lack of information on emissions from southern U.S. fuel types resulted in a search through the published and grey literature to locate emissions information. Emissions information for 118 smoke components from 51 of the reviewed references are currently contained in the Wildland Fire Emissions Factor Database, which contains information published up to 2011. Pertinent information related to the fuels, instrumentation used, and geographic location is contained in the spreadsheet and can be used to locate emissions factors using the spreadsheet search functions. Model / Software

DUSTRAN is a comprehensive dispersion modeling system consisting of a dust-emission module, a diagnostic meteorological model, and dispersion models that are integrated seamlessly into a geographic information system (GIS) interface. The dust emissions module calculates emissions for explicit size classes from both active (e.g. vehicular) and natural (e.g. wind-blown) sources. Users can interactively create a release scenario using data layering that displays the model domain, sources, and results as well as other spatial and geophysical data sources to aid in analyzing and interpreting the scenario.

DUSTRAN 1.0 User’s Guide: A GIS-Based Atmospheric Dust Dispersion Modeling System – documents the technical aspects of the modeling system and includes installation instructions, and detailed example tutorials, in addition to the user’s guide.
