Objective

The following technical objectives will be evaluated under this project:

  • Identification of hurdles that preclude transition of technologies to field maintenance activities.
  • Identification of requirements, both general and technology specific, that need to be addressed.
  • Development of a methodology that can be used by all SERDP/ESTCP programs to provide the appropriate focus on field maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrate the methodology by transitioning an identified technology for use by Army field maintenance activities.

Technology Description

The approach for this project will be a focused consideration of field maintenance as a rapid path to transition for new technologies, which can encompass a wide array of activities, from Soldiers performing spot painting on equipment to below depot maintenance, where full vehicle repainting (with limited asset disassembly) is performed at a dedicated maintenance facility. Due to differences in these maintenance activities (material volumes, ordering systems, skills, hazardous materials handling requirements, etc.) the same solutions are not applicable. The Methodology developed under this project (paper-based and/or digital) would identify critical activities, testing, data collection, and verification needed for field implementation. This process is expected to be an enabler for field implementation of new technologies as well as feed into the SERDP/ESTCP data consolidation efforts.

Benefits

The expected benefit to the Department of Defense is the transition of proven corrosion prevention and control technologies to field maintenance activities and a methodology to transition past and future technologies. This will provide active-duty personnel the proper products to maintain their equipment, which in turn will reduce maintenance costs and improve readiness. It is estimated that field level maintenance accounts for approximately 25% or more of annual costs of corrosion; this would directly contribute to the reduction of these costs. [Herzberg, 2013]
