Site Description

Located in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, portions of Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) were used by the military beginning in the early 1900s. The Central Impact Area (CIA) was used for artillery and mortars from the late 1930s until 1997. During the late 1940s, the CIA also contained Navy air-to-ground rocket ranges. This demonstration will be conducted as part of the ongoing National Guard Bureau’s Impact Area Groundwater Study Program (IAGWSP) on two discrete 3-acre areas of the CIA after vegetation clearance.

Suspected Munitions Present at the Demonstration Site

5-in, 7-in, 8-in, 14.5-mm, 20-mm, 30-mm, 37-mm, 75-mm, 90-mm, 105-mm, 155-mm, and 175-mm projectiles

60-mm, 81-mm, and 4.2-in mortars

2.36-in, 2.75-in, and 3.5-in rockets

Demonstration Summary

A modified version of the Geonics EM61-MK2 sensor, the most widely used EMI sensor for UXO commercial surveys, will be used in a single-sensor cart configuration for anomaly detection. This survey will be performed as part of the National Guard Bureau’s IAGWSP, and the raw data will be provided to the ESTCP Program Office to support this demonstration, but will not be used for classification as part of the study. Advanced EMI systems will be used to perform cued interrogation of a number of the anomalies detected. The commercial MetalMapper will be used for cued interrogation on approximately 1,500 anomalies in one 3-acre area. The Naval Research Laboratory’s man-portable Time-domain Electromagnetic Multi-sensor Towed Array Detection System (TEMTADS) 2x2x3 array will be used to collect cued data on approximately 1,000 anomalies in the other 3-acre area. Several types of classification processing will be evaluated, including statistical classification algorithms and library matching.
