Thermal Treatment Technologies: Lessons Learned
Thursday, December 1, 10:30am – 12:30 pm

Participants received 2 professional development hours upon course completion.

Instructors:

Dr. Ronald Falta – Clemson University – Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences Dr. Paul Johnson – Arizona State University – Ira A. In situ thermal treatment has proven to be an effective, but often expensive, method for treating source zones. However, there has been a lack of information on the costs and performance of the various approaches to thermal treatment. This short course summarized the results from several recent projects that have focused on improving the technology and understanding its performance, especially for difficult sites such as those with DNAPLs in fractured bedrock. The course covered the state of the art and recent advances in the fundamental understanding of thermal technologies and also highlighted recent field-scale demonstrations. The focus was on the implications of the findings from recent SERDP and ESTCP projects for both regulators and practitioners.

ON-DEMAND VIDEO AVAILABLE: The on-demand video of this short course summarizes the results from several recent research and demonstration projects focused on improving the technology and understanding its performance, especially for difficult sites such as those with dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contamination in fractured bedrock. Links to the modules are available below. In addition, the material is available in its entirety in PDF format.
