Composite materials are becoming a larger proportion of military weapons systems each year. They offer a weight advantage and can provide equivalent or improved structural performance. For some applications, however, enhanced thermal performance is required and SERDP and ESTCP are investigating high performance resins and composites. One major drawback to composite materials is the shelf life of resin materials and prepreg fibers and fabrics. Wasted material and material held beyond specified use time contribute to hazardous material disposal costs. SERDP is investing in several efforts aimed at recycling, reusing or reclaiming fibers, resins and composite materials.
