At the upcoming annual SERDP-ESTCP symposium scheduled for Nov 30 – Dec 4, 2020, the Installation Energy and Water (EW) program area will host Technical Sessions, a Short Course and Poster Sessions to showcase the latest research and technologies that improve the performance of DoD installations’ energy and water systems. The EW Program will present three technical sessions, featuring the latest in Energy Resilient, Energy Efficient and Cyber Secure technologies. In addition, EW will co-host a technical session highlighting technologies and solutions to improve installation water resilience. All four sessions will feature ongoing demonstrations and results, where available, of these cutting-edge cost-effective solutions.

The first technical session,Advances in Installation Resilient Technologies, is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, 10:00 AM to 1:10 PM ET. This session will focus on microgrids and the advancements and solutions demonstrated in this area. The speakers include several of the FY20 new start projects that will be demonstrating innovative microgrid solutions designed to improve the energy security, reliability and resilience to disruptions from electrical grid outages. The solutions include advances in microgrid controllers, design, and energy storage technologies.

The second technical session, Addressing Water Issues on Installations, is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, from 2:00 PM to 5:10 PM ET. This session includes a combination of projects funded by the Environmental Restoration (ER) Program and the EW Program, as well as presentations on recent Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and Air Force water resilience initiatives. This session will cover topics ranging from water quality, wastewater treatment, water conservation and water resilience.

The third technical session, Building Energy Efficiency Technologies, is scheduled for Wednesday December 2, 10:00 AM to 1:10 PM ET. With roughly 300,000 buildings managed by DoD across its installations, improving building system efficiency can reduce operating costs and support mission assurance by ensuring that systems operate optimally when needed and as needed. This session will highlight the latest advancements in building energy efficiency technologies, especially in HVAC, lighting and building control systems. In addition, the keynote will provide an Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) perspective on adopting new technologies and the role of demonstrations in advancing the deployment of new solutions.

The fourth, and final EW technical session,Control System Cyber Security Technologies, is scheduled for Thursday December 3, 10:00 AM to 1:10 PM ET. As installations upgrade buildings with “smart” networked technologies to improve building operational efficiency and capability, improving our ability to protect these systems from cyber-attack is critical to ensuring their availability to support mission-essential functions. This session will include presentations on active ESTCP demonstrations of some of the latest advancements in control system cybersecurity technologies, including secure transmission of data using low cost data diode, automated firmware analysis, continuous monitoring of control systems and connected device configurations.

In addition to the technical sessions, EW will also present a short course onDoD Risk Management Framework (RMF) and Steps to Obtain Authority To Operate (ATO). The short course is scheduled for Thursday, December 4, 2020, 2:00 to 4:00 PM ET. This course will take an in depth look into the DoD’s RMF requirements and the process to attain an ATO. This course is geared to help ESTCP Investigators and Project Teams become familiar with the RMF process, understand the requirements and if/how they apply and learn about the available resources.

There will be poster sessions throughout the length of the Symposium featuring all the ongoing EW projects. The Principle Investigators for each of these projects will be present at their posters to network and respond to questions regarding their technology and demonstration.
