The SERDP and ESTCP Symposium is rapidly approaching and several technical sessions will be offered that highlight projects funded by the Environmental Restoration Program Area. These sessions will provide an overview of the innovative research and demonstrations being completed that focuses on cleaning and managing contaminated lands on current and former military installations.

On Tuesday afternoon, December 3, 2019, we’re offering a technical session that will discuss recent field demonstrations of groundwater characterization and treatment. This session will present the DoD perspective of groundwater treatment and provide an overview of several demonstration projects that have been transitioned for use throughout the DoD. Specifically, the issues addressed will deal with remedial amendment delivery, treatment of complex media, and characterization degradation pathways for the evaluation of natural attenuation.

The session on Wednesday morning, December 4, 2019, will present recent advancements in the management of contaminated sediments and stormwater. This technical session will highlight the regulatory and restoration project manager perspective of contaminated sites and provide an overview of best management practices and innovative approaches for site characterization and treatment of sediment contamination and stormwater runoff.

The final technical session will be a two-part session on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning, December 4 and 5, 2019, which will highlight recent successful SERDP and ESTCP projects addressing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) issues in the environment. Over the past eight years, SERDP and ESTCP have funded a large number of research and demonstration projects looking at PFAS at Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) contaminated sites. This two-part session will provide a DoD perspective on the state of the science as well as an overview of some of the issues related to PFAS at these contaminated sites. Specifically, this session will discuss issues such as mixed contaminants, investigative derived waste removal, in situ remediation technologies, and source zone characterization.

You can find additional information about these technical sessions on the SERDP & ESTCP Symposium website.
