SERDP and ESTCP host the Advanced Surface Engineering Technologies for a Sustainable Defense (ASETSDefense) Workshop as a space for design and sustainment engineers, industrial hygienists, program managers, and government officials to exchange information on environmentally benign alternatives for chemicals, like cadmium (Cd) and hexavalent chromium (Cr+6), commonly used in surface treatments that combat wear and corrosion.

As the aerospace and defense industry continues working towards improved material performance and reductions in life cycle sustainment and acquisition costs, it also faces mounting pressure to comply with environmental, safety and occupational health (ESOH) requirements. ASETSDefense provides the opportunity for key stakeholders involved in these supply chains to share the latest strides in developing sustainable chemical and process alternatives.

This year, ASETSDefense will be held virtually August 4 - 6, 2020. The online event will feature 11 technical sessions and live Q&As with the panelists. If you have already registered, you can access the virtual center to access the technical sessions and poster presentations, along with other content. A brief agenda of the sessions is included below:

Tuesday, August 4

Session 1: Aerospace and Defense Needs, Approaches and Environmental Issues

Session 2: DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office

Session 3: Accelerated Corrosion Testing and Tracking

Session 4: Additive Manufacturing and Repair

Session 5: Paint and Depaint Systems

Wednesday, August 5

Session 6: Depot Perspectives and Mission Readiness - Naval Aircraft

Session 7: Depot Perspectives and Mission Readiness - Helicopters, Vehicles

Session 8: Depot Perspectives and Mission Readiness - Alternate Approaches

Thursday, August 6

Session 9: Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) Technology Development

Session 10: Corrosion Control Technologies - ZnNi

Session 11: Biocorrosion and Antibacterial Coatings

A technical poster session also will occur at ASETSDefense. Attendees can view poster abstracts and brief video presentations within the online event portal during the conference. To facilitate discussion, we will hold networking receptions for the posters, in which attendees will be able to join meetings separated by topic and chat live with a small group of poster presenters.

With this virtual programming, ASETSDefense will aid in the technology transfer of environmentally friendly surface engineering technologies for defense organizations by sharing technical data from research, development, test, evaluation efforts and providing updates on the status of approvals and implementations.
