Engineers throughout the aerospace and defense industry are under constant and increasing pressure to improve corrosion and wear performance of materials while reducing the overall costs of acquisition and lifecycle sustainment. Simultaneously, occupational and environmental safety and health concerns are driving the replacement of the most widely used surface treatments.  Under REACH, European companies are under pressure to assess and manage chemical risk.  U.S. companies and the Department of Defense (DoD) are undertaking similar efforts to eliminate cadmium (Cd) and hexavalent chromium (Cr+6).  Selling and maintaining U.S. weapon systems in Europe means that REACH continues to affect DoD and U.S. original equipment manufacturers (OEM).  While efforts to qualify alternatives continue, Cd and Cr+6 along with other hazardous or toxic materials can still be used in the U.S. with appropriate precautions.

ASETSDefense (Advanced Surface Engineering Technologies for a Sustainable Defense) is a SERDP and ESTCP Initiative that provides engineering resources – and a research database of testing, qualification, and implementation information – to the defense industry.  These workshops provide an opportunity for Design and Sustainment Engineers, Industrial Hygienists, Program or Business Managers, and Policy Makers to share recent developments on testing and implementing sustainable chemical and process alternatives.  Primary focus is given to technical presentations, posters, and discussions, including side meetings for the detailed examination of particularly significant issues.

The 7th ASETSDefense Workshop will be held in Denver Colorado, at the Grand Hyatt, on August 21-23, 2018, and will be held in partnership with the DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office.
