Installation Energy Innovation

The Department’s fixed installations are a critical element of national security. ESTCP energy resilience projects ensure installations meet the DoD minimum requirement of 14+ days of uninterruptable power for mission-critical loads to defeat threats posed to grid power by increased cyber attacks, physical attacks, and extreme weather outages.

Resource Conservation

To conduct its mission, the DoD manages over 28 million acres of natural and built infrastructure across a wide variety of ecosystems and geographies around the globe. SERDP and ESTCP support the development of the science, technologies, and methods needed to manage DoD’s installation infrastructure with the goal of maximizing the number of training days and mission readiness.

Range Sustainability

Weapons Systems and Platforms

SERDP and ESTCP projects reduce the environmental and toxicological impact of DoD operations while maximizing DoD weapons systems and platforms performance and capabilities. The current portfolio addresses corrosion and repair, munitions, fire suppressant chemicals/operations, and refrigerants.

Climate Resilience

SERDP and ESTCP continue to mature and develop tools for assessing climate change impacts, managing climate-related risks, and informing decision-making across installations. In October 2020, the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) launched the DoD Regional Sea Level (DRSL) tool enabling DoD planners and managers to understand and assess a range of site-specific scenarios of future sea level rise and extreme water level conditions for three-time horizons: 2035, 2065, and 2100.
