Resource Conservation and Resiliency’s 2020 Virtual Symposium Sessions Explore DoD’s Natural and Built Infrastructure
The 2020 SERDP and ESTCP virtual Symposium is rapidly approaching! This year the Symposium’s Resource Conservation and Resiliency
(RCR) program area features three technical sessions. Each session aims to communicate findings and enhance Department of Defense (DoD) mission effectiveness through the improved management of natural and built infrastructure. The technical sessions will focus on three subjects: Installation Infrastructure Resiliency; Military Land Condition-Readiness and Wildland Fire; and Threatened, Endangered, and Invasive Species.
The first RCR session begins on Tuesday, December 1st from 10:00 AM – 1:10 PM and delves into the built and natural infrastructure on military installations and lands facing threats from long-term changes in climate and ocean conditions. These threats directly impact the installation mission, to train and deploy forces. This session examines on-going research efforts to develop tools and approaches to improve DoD built and natural infrastructure resilience.
The second technical session highlights wildfire and prescribed fire research, the core focus areas of the RCR Military Land Condition and Readiness Portfolio. SERDP and ESTCP research improves DoD fire management tools and practices, predict and manage smoke emissions and dispersion, and decrease risks from wildfires. Today, these topics are critically important for the nation and for DoD the research is critical for military readiness, as well as safeguarding the health and safety of the force. This session is on Tuesday, December 1st from 2:00 – 5:10 PM.
The third technical session takes place on Wednesday, December 2nd from 10:00 AM – 1:10 PM and examines the management of threatened and endangered species, at-risk species, and invasive species. Research on these topics is key for DoD installation training activities and strategic mobility; they comprose the RCR research that examines the Readiness-Ecosystem Nexus.
