Currently, prescribed fire is the primary tool by which DoD installations mitigate wildfire risk, manage fire-adapted ecosystems and their associated listed and at-risk species, and provide safe and realistic training environments. To help guide future investments to better coordinate fire-science research across agencies, the RC program area has developed a Fire Science Strategy that will provide a framework for advancing solutions to current and future fire-associated natural resource management challenges faced by DoD managers. The ESTCP Classification Pilot Program successfully demonstrated munitions response classification technologies at the Central Impact Area of Camp Edwards on the Massachusetts Military Reservation in Cape Cod, MA. The demonstration was conducted in conjunction with the National Guard Bureau’s Impact Area Groundwater Study Program with emphasis on removing potential groundwater contamination sources produced by munition constituents. SERDP and ESTCP’s Hard Chrome Alternatives Team successfully eliminated hard chrome plating, a major hexavalent chromium process, from its biggest use in aerospace. High velocity oxygen fuel thermal spray coating is now used throughout the aircraft industry and in military depots where aircraft are repaired. Not only does an HVOF coating eliminate hexavalent chromium, but it also lasts longer, wears less, corrodes less, does not embrittle steel or reduce its fatigue life. More

What is a large, essential, and often unnoticed electricity consumer on DoD facilities? Street and other outdoor lighting. Entire cities have even begun to address this concern with large scale “relighting” projects. The City of Los Angeles is relighting all of their public outdoor spaces with LEDs and expects to save approximately $8.8 million on its electric bill and approximately $3 million in maintenance costs. Similarly, ESTCP along with Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University demonstrated a relighting project that will improve light quality and save on electricity, while sustaining lighting functionality. Managing Contaminated Sediments Blog Graphic

SERDP and ESTCP have been investing in technologies to improve our management of contaminated sediments for over 10 years. The Program has hosted several expert panel workshops to guide investments in this area, with the most recent workshop held in 2012. The results of this workshop have led to the selection of a suite of new projects focused on improving our understanding of the impact of ongoing, low-level contaminant influx to aquatic sediment site restoration.


The SERDP-funded DCERP conducts mission-relevant basic and applied research in support of ecosystem-based management. The program's primary goal is to enhance and sustain the military mission by developing an understanding of coastal and estuarine ecosystem composition, structure, and function within the context of a military training environment. This long-term collaborative effort, led by RTI International, centered primarily on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, NC, is being conducted in two phases: DCERP1 ran from 2006 to 2013 and DCERP2 began in 2013. A joint ESTCP, USACE, US Forest Service, and Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment demonstration of classification applied to munitions response is underway at former Camp Hale, CO. This demonstration, part of the ESTCP Classification Pilot Program, is being conducted at the EFV Range Complex located within the former Camp Hale on 382 acres in the White River National Forest. More


The DoD is devoting considerable effort to reducing fuel costs and emissions by developing advanced gas turbine engines as well as reducing the dependence on foreign oil by developing and testing alternative fuels. In anticipation of an increased use of alternative fuels across DoD, new tools are needed to predict the formation of air emissions from advanced engines burning alternative fuels. Two SERDP projects are developing a more fundamental understanding of the formation of air emissions in gas turbine engines. More


Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla, plans for the Gigafactory to not only supply Tesla and other car companies with batteries, but also to produce stationary batteries for buildings and renewable energy assets. These batteries are very similar to batteries involved in three ESTCP demonstrations, which are part of ESTCP’s portfolio of projects demonstrating various components of microgrids on military installations.
